Brushing Blues

Image
You may be one of those who takes excellent care of your teeth. Your mother has been responsible for instilling this good habit. Brush regularly as properly, she said. You have taken her advice and now your routine is set. You brush as well as you can using the best marketed toothbrush and as often as three times a day. Yet, one morning, you get a nasty shock. Peering into the bathroom mirror, you see that the gum line over some teeth has receded. Not only that, there is a groove at the gum line which is so sensitive to the touch. What could have gone wrong? Gum recession most often happens due to plaque and tartar accumulation, but with all the care that you have taken, that is probably not the reason. Ironically, the cause could be too much care. Let me explain. Brushing for longer than a minute and a half and too frequently with an abrasive technique could be damaging. Heavy prolonged pressure applied with the bristles moving back and forth can cause the enamel to wear away an...

What’s a tooth post?

When you have to get a crown for your tooth the dentist says you need a ‘post’. Posts are small pillar-like structures meant to strengthen your tooth before capping. Badly broken down or damaged teeth need root canal treatment. Such teeth are weak structurally and brittle and cannot support a cap unless strengthened. A ‘post’ made of metal of fiber is inserted into the treated root and strong core composite resin is packed. Quite like reinforcing concrete. The core of the tooth is made into a solid, strong structure which can take the load of chewing when it is capped. Posts are a bit more laborious during the clinical procedure but well worth the effort. It ensures the longevity of the crown on your tooth! Paediatric dentistry guidelines for parents

Children’s first (milk) teeth are important because, apart from being needed for chewing and speaking, they help to maintain space for permanent teeth, developing underneath them in the jaws. If the milk teeth are well looked after, then it is more likely that the second (permanent) teeth will grow into their correct position. DID YOU KNOW? Babies in utero have about 20 teeth already developing. Children’s teeth begin forming before birth. As early as 4 but usually 6-7 months, the first milk teeth to erupt are the lower central incisors. Although 20 milk teeth appear by the age of 3, the pace and order of their eruption varies. The first permanent tooth is usually one of the four six-year-molars – so named because they appear around age 6. Molars are important because they help shape the lower part of the child’s face as well as affect the position of the other permanent teeth. Root Canal Treatment Cost in India

What is root canal treatment? When a tooth becomes infected or damaged by a small cavity, a small filling will usually suffice to restore the tooth back to it’s original form and restore function. If the damage to the tooth is more extensive, then a crown or an inlay can be considered to restore form and function. However, sometimes, damage to the tooth can be very extensive, with the cavity increasing at the cost of the interior of the tooth, known as the pulp. The pulp is essentially the heart of the tooth and contains nerves and blood vessels. Once this area is compromised, a root canal treatment must be done to clear out the infection and save the tooth. What happens if I don’t do a root canal treatment? If a root canal treatment is not done, the infection will continue to spread to the bone, effectively causing loss of the tooth and spread of the infection to distant parts of the body. Continued infection also reduces the bone available in this area for a future implant or...

What are Dental Implants? Dental Implants have sparked a revolution in the field of dentistry, and Acharya Dental Chennai is proud to be one of the pioneers in bringing this field to India more than two decades ago. Dental implants are titanium inserts which are placed in the jaw bone and serve to restore one or more missing teeth. They are also used to more effectively retain dentures, and patients who wear dentures retained by them are very happy with the added security and comfort that they provide. Acharya Dental is one of the early pioneers of bringing this technology to India over two decades ago. Why can’t I just get a bridge? A major advantage of implants over conventional bridges is that no adjacent teeth need to be reduced in order to place a dental implant. In a bridge, neighboring teeth need to be shaped down to accommodate a bridge and replace a missing tooth. When implants are used, the neighboring teeth are spared and the missing tooth is effectively restored. In...

Crown and Bridge

Crown and Bridge Crowns  (caps) are used to cover teeth that are weakened by decay, severely damaged, chipped or discoloured. Crowns are frequently on teeth required after root canal therapy on molars on premolars to protect them from the fracture. The tooth is shaped to support the crown. Crowns can be metallic or metal-free. The advantage of metal free crowns, such as Zirconia and E.max, are the masking of the grey hue on the gum line caused by the silver coloured metal. In certain situations, computer technology is also utilized to fabricate these metal free restorations at  Acharya Dental . Contact us to find out if you are a candidate for metal-free restorations. While implant dentistry has decreased the need for bridges, we at Acharya Dental still frequently use the classical bridge to replace a missing tooth. Two or more teeth on either side of a missing tooth are shaped to receive a bridge. Bridges can also be metallic or metal free. Source:  https://www.a...
